About PollutionRanked

PollutionRanked ranks every US zip code by environmental pollution. We combine data from three EPA sources — toxic release facilities (TRI), drinking water violations (SDWIS), and air quality measurements (AQS) — into a single composite score per zip code.

Why We Built This

Environmental data is public but scattered across dozens of government databases. Nobody combines it into a simple, searchable format. We do. Whether you're buying a home, researching an area, or just curious about what's in your air and water, we give you the full picture in seconds.

Our Data Sources

  • EPA TRI — Toxic Release Inventory. Facilities that release toxic chemicals.
  • EPA SDWIS — Safe Drinking Water Information System. Water system violations.
  • EPA AQS — Air Quality System. County-level air quality measurements.

How Scores Work

Each zip code receives a composite score from 1 to 100 (lower = cleaner environment). The score weights toxic facility density (35%), water quality violations (35%), and air quality (30%). See our methodology page for full details on the scoring algorithm.
